Role
As Co-Lead Designer, I was responsible for creating mechanics, track layouts, and game flow that makes MMM the whimsical runner it is today. This was my first time working on a mobile game, which presented a lot of challenges when designing for a smaller platform with limited visibility and rendering power. I oversaw all level design and gameflow (alongside doing some of the track layouts myself) while working closely with our engineers and tech artists to direct mechanics, controls, and interactions that build on the game's quirky identity
Project Description
You’re Melon, a tiny hamster with a huge goal. Collect mix-ins, roll fast, and build momentum to churn the biggest ice cream scoop ever in this whimsical, on-rails runner.
Since this was the first time I worked on a runner / racing game, I spent a lot of time analyzing similar titles within the genre to gain an understanding of what we could add to the table. The biggest hurdle in this process was track design, since we had a lot of big ideas for how players could interact and change the environment based on the mix-ins they picked up. A lot of my time during development was spent refining my track work, as I developed a sense for the game's needs by experimenting through trial and error. In the end, I was able to expand my development skills by tackling a game outside of my comfort zone, which has now given me a deeper appreciation for the work that goes into games like Mario Kart and Kirby Air Ride
